But the studio has an outsized impact on Japan’s noted animation industry
that outstrips a list of the works it has produced, said Tokyo-based film
commentator Yuichi Maeda.

“It’s one of the best and largest animation firms in Japan, and with that
loss of life, many of the best hands at animation in the nation are likely to
be dead,” Maeda said, his voice shaking. “It’s too painful to
contemplate.”

While some companies, such as Hayao Miyazaki’s “Studio Ghibli” were well

stretched across the board.

“They really never did anything wrong. The animation was great, the story
quality was really high. Overall, the balance was just amazing,” Maeda said.

A pillar of Japanese pop culture, it has become a major cultural export,
winning fans around the world.

“For many people in Taiwan, Kyoto Animation evokes memories of their

“It’s hard to put into words how I feel,” said 27-year-old animation fan
Yuichi Kumami, who had taken time off work at his company in nearby Osaka to
lay flowers at the site.

“They may not be able to produce the same kind of works again and it was my
hope that there would be more memorable works in the future, but that may be

Thursday’s attack on Kyoto Animation, well known for its television series
and movies, was the worst mass killing in two decades in a country with one of
the world’s lowest crime rates.

以電視及電影動畫聞名的「京都動畫」18日遭到縱火，是這日本作為世界上幾個最低犯罪率國家之一，20多年來最嚴重的慘案。

Many of the victims were young women, company president Hideaki Hatta said.

社長八田英明表示，許多死難者都是年輕女性。

“Some of them joined us just in April. And on the eighth of July, I gave them
 a small, but their first, bonus,” he said.

他說：「有些人4月才加入工作室，7月8日時，我給了他們一筆小小的，卻是他們人生中的第1份獎金。」

“People who had a promising future lost their lives. I don’t know what to
say. Rather than feeling anger, I just don’t have words,” Hatta said.

他說：「前程似錦的人生去了生命，我不知道能說什麼，與其說是憤怒，反而是不知道能說什麼。」

“It was a choice of jumping from the second floor and getting injured, or
dying,” he told NHK, adding that there were employees who could not bring
themselves to jump.

Fumiko Shimizu, 91, who lives close to the building and watched the fire from
her balcony at home, said she regularly greeted the staff she met in the

“I used to see them going to the convenience store in groups of six or so to
buy lunch boxes. There were a lot of young people, in the twenties and
thirties,” she said.

“They died so young when it would be alright for somebody like me to die
anytime.”

The two men, friends since high school, were in touch on social media a week
ago about getting together for a drink. But on Sunday, one was mourning the
other, a victim of the arson attack on a Japanese animation studio that has
claimed 34 lives.


“He was quite a shy person, so he didn’t tell people that he’d managed to
get a job at the studio. He was a great drawer. Working at an animation studio
 was his dream,” the 30-year-old friend, who declined to give his name, said
near the site of the studio, a burnt hulk at the end of a quiet residential
street.
