BEIJING: A gold and jade statue of Mao Zedong worth more than $16 million was unveiled on Friday, in the latest example of Communist China's indecision over how to commemorate its founding father's 120th anniversary.
The statue, 80cm (32 inches) tall but weighing more than 50 kilograms, was put on display in the southern boom town of Shenzhen, China National Radio (CNR) reported.The city was little more than a fishing village a few decades ago, and its booming prosperity epitomises China's transformation since the days of Mao's command economy.
一尊价值1600多万美元的毛泽东黄金玉石雕像13日亮相，这是中国在如何庆祝毛泽东120岁诞辰上举棋不定的最新例子。

The figure depicts the founder of the People's Republic of China reclining in a chair, legs crossed.
A team of 20 artists took eight months to complete the 100 million-yuan ($16.5 million) work, which is accented with precious stones and rests on a base of white jade, CNR said.
这尊雕像显示毛泽东靠着椅背，翘着二郎腿。
报道称，一个20名艺术家团队花了8个月时间，完成这座价值1亿人民币（1650万美元）的雕像，特点在于珍贵宝石，以及雕像的基座是白玉。

Funny to see the Chinese putting up statues. I have always considered China to be what it is because of lack of symbolism like we have in India. This statue is an aberration. India has more statues than traffic signals. I have seen villages where there are as many as 5 statues one next to the other of leaders of opposing parties!! So much unity on statues but very little unity on matters of national importance.
中国人也立雕像了，看着就觉得有趣。我一直以为中国缺少印度所具备的“符号”。这尊雕像不寻常，颠覆了我的看法。印度的雕像比交通信号灯更多。我曾经见过印度某些村子有多达5尊雕像，一个挨着一个，都是反对党领袖的雕像！印度人在立雕像上倒是很团结，而在事关国家重要性的问题上却团结不起来。
