UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt tweeted: “Congratulations to the people of
Taiwan for introducing same-sex marriage! Great news for its LGBT community &
another huge step forward for LGBT equality in Asia.”

Today is the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia
(IDAHOBIT), and Taiwan has marked it in the most extraordinary way by passing
a legislation to legally recognise same-sex marriage. After all, the
significance of the day is to remind us that everyone should enjoy the same
rights regardless of his or her sexual orientation.

As Taiwan passed the marriage equality bill, making it the first place to
recognise same-sex marriage in Asia, we would like to congratulate the people
of Taiwan on this achievement, and would like to welcome the people of Taiwan
to join the every-growing international community with marriage equality.
This is one big step forward in human rights not only for Taiwan, but also
for Asia and for the world.
