Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen has called on China to “face reality” and
“review” its current policy toward the de facto nation that Beijing claims i
s part of its territory.

台灣總統蔡英文呼籲中國「正視事實」並且「重新檢視」對於北京將其稱為部分領土但卻
已實質獨立的國家之政策。

Tsai, who won re-election in a landslide victory on Saturday, told reporters:
“We hope China can thoroughly understand the opinion and will expressed by Ta
iwanese people in this election and review their current policies.”

壓倒性勝選取得連任的蔡英文，在週六告訴記者：「我們希望中國可以仔細地理解台灣人
民在這場選舉中所表達的意見和意志，並重新檢視它目前的政策。」

The president’s comments come days after China’s top diplomat said that unif
ication with China was a “historical inevitability” and that anyone who oppo
sed it would “stink for 10,000 years,” an idiom to mean someone will go down
 in infamy.

蔡總統一番話的幾天之前，中國的外交部長才說過台灣與中國的統一是「歷史性不可避免
」，而任何阻撓統一的人都將「遺臭萬年」。

China has repeatedly said that it will bring Taiwan under its authority by any
 means necessary, including force. Analysts believe Chinese leader Xi Jinping
aims to achieve that by 2049, the deadline for the country to achieve its “gr
eat rejuvenation”.

中國再三重申就算不計手段，包括武力犯台，也要把台灣納入其統治。分析師認為習近平
欲在2049年以前達成該目標；2049年為中國「民族偉大復興」的截止期限。

Taiwan was ruled for more than three decades by the nationalist army, the Kuom
intang, which fled to the island in 1949 after being defeated by the Chinese c
ommunist party and created a rival government, the Republic of China, better k
nown today as Taiwan. It has since transformed into a multi-party democracy, u
nder a government and political system completely separate from China’s.



The election of a candidate who campaigned heavily on promises to not allow Ta
iwan to become another Hong Kong has been widely seen as a rebuke to China’s
efforts to intimidate and persuade Taiwan citizens to support unification.

蔡英文在競選過程中強烈宣示不允許把台灣變成香港的這場選舉，被廣泛視為是對於中國
向台灣人民軟硬兼施訴求統一所做努力的打臉。

Under Tsai’s first term, Beijing severed a dialogue mechanism with Taiwan and
 has sought to isolate it diplomatically. In a show of strength, China sailed
its new aircraft carrier through the Taiwan strait twice in the run up to the
election.

蔡英文的第一個任期裡，北京中斷與台灣對話的機制，並且在外交上孤立台灣。為了展現
其實力，選舉前中國還二度在台灣海峽航行航母。

Tsai opposes unification but has never said that she would formally declare Ta
iwan’s independence, which would provoke Beijing.

蔡英文拒絕統一，但她從未說過會正式宣告台獨，一個會激怒北京的舉動。

“We don’t have a need to declare ourselves an independent state,” Tsai told
 the BBC. “We are an independent country already and we call ourselves the Re
public of China, Taiwan.”

「我們不需要宣告我們是個獨立的國家。」蔡英文對BBC這麼說。「我們已經是個獨立的
國家了，我們稱呼自己為中華民國台灣。」

Tsai said the election served as a “very strong message from the people of Ta
iwan.”

蔡英文說選舉的結果傳達了「來自台灣人民非常強烈的訊息」。

“They don’t like the idea of being threatened all the time. We are a success
ful democracy … We deserve respect from China,” she said. “We have a separa
te identity and we’re a country of our own.”

「他們不喜歡時時刻刻被威嚇。我們是個成功的民主國家...我們是該得到中國的尊重。
」她如是說。「我們有著截然分離的認同，而我們是我們自己的國家。」

Beijing has refused to deal directly with Tsai on the grounds that she has not
, like her predecessor, accepted the so-called 1992 consensus which says that
Taiwan and China are part of “one China”. The vague agreement leaves it up t
o each side to interpret the definition of “one China”.

北京至今拒絕和蔡英文直接交涉，因爲她沒有像她的前任者一樣接受把台灣和中國同屬「
一中」的九二共識。這個模糊的協議把詮釋「一中」的定義留給了兩方。

Tsai said that before dialogue can be re-opened, Beijing must review its curre
nt approach. “If they are not prepared to face reality, then whatever we offe
r won’t be satisfying to them.”

蔡英文表示，在對話可以重啟之前，北京必須重新檢視它目前的模式。「如果他們沒有準
備好面對現實，那不管我們做什麼都沒辦法滿足他們。」
