YANGON (Reuters) - Facebook Inc (FB.O) said on Saturday it was working to find
 out how Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s name appeared as “Mr Shithole” in post
s on its platform when translated into English from Burmese, apologizing for a
ny offense caused and saying the problem had been fixed.

The error came to light on the second day of a visit by the president to the S
outheast Asian country, where Xi and state counselor Aung San Suu Kyi signed d
ozens of agreements covering massive Beijing-backed infrastructure plans.

在習大大訪問東南亞國家的第二天，這個錯誤就發生。習近平與翁山蘇姬在東南亞國家簽
署了數十項協議，涵蓋了北京支持的大規模基礎設施計劃。

A statement about the visit published on Suu Kyi’s official Facebook page was
 littered with references to “Mr Shithole” when translated to English, while
 a headline in local news journal the Irrawaddy appeared as “Dinner honors pr
esident shithole”.

官方Facebook頁面上發表的有關訪問的聲明中，當翻譯成英語時，是“ 屎洞先生”，而
當地新聞雜誌《 Irrawaddy》的標題則是“ Dinner Honors President Shithole”。

It was not clear how long the issue had lasted but Google’s translation funct
ion did not show the same error.

“We have fixed an issue regarding Burmese to English translations on Facebook
 and are working to identify the cause to ensure that it doesn’t happen again
,” Facebook said in a statement. “This issue is not a reflection of the way
our products should work and we sincerely apologize for the offence this has c
aused.”

「我們已解決臉書上從緬甸文翻成英文時導致技術性錯誤問題。這不應發生，我們採取措
施，保障不會再發生這類情事。我們為所造成的錯誤誠摯道歉。」

China is Facebook’s biggest country for revenue after the United States, and
the tech company is setting up a new engineering team to focus specifically on
 the lucrative advertising business there, Reuters reported last week.

“We are aware of an issue regarding Burmese to English translations on Facebo
ok, and we’re doing everything we can to fix this as quickly as possible,” a
 spokesperson for the tech company said in a statement.

臉書的發言人在一份聲明中說：“我們知道有關Facebook上緬甸語到英語翻譯的問題，我
們正在盡一切努力盡快解決此問題。”

“This issue is not a reflection of the way our products should work and we si
ncerely apologize for the offence this has caused.”

Facebook has faced numerous problems with translation from Burmese in the past
 In 2018 it temporarily removed the function after a Reuters report showed th
e tool was producing bizarre results.


An investigation documented how the company was failing in its efforts to comb
at vitriolic Burmese language posts about Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims, some 73
0,000 of whom fled a military crackdown in 2017 that the U.N has said was cond
ucted with “genocidal intent”.


It also showed the translation feature was flawed, citing an anti-Rohingya pos
t advocating killing Muslims that was translated into English as “I shouldn’
t have a rainbow in Myanmar”.
