This year, 9,600 students applied for early admission to MIT, and we have offe
red early admission to 707. These students hail from more than 486 high school
s scattered across the globe, from Alaska to Zimbabwe and many places in betwe
en. We can’t wait to welcome them to campus to join the 4,602 outstanding und
ergraduates who already call MIT home. Though they all do different things —
activism and athletics, baking and birding, cosplay and chess — they are unit
ed by a shared standard of rigorous academics, high character, and a strong ma
tch with MIT’s mission to use science, technology, and the useful arts to mak
e the world a better place.
We deferred 6,182 applicants. These students will be reconsidered without prej
udice in Regular Action. Deferred students do not need to send us anything new
 other than the February Updates and Notes Form, which will become available i
n mid-January on your MyMIT account. We have posted more information for defer
red students here; you can also read blog posts about being deferred here, her
e, and here.
Because of the competitiveness of our pool, we have already informed 2,483 stu
dents that we will not be able to offer them admission this year. This decisio
n has been made with care, and it is final. I know this can be a difficult dec
ision to receive, but honestly, it works out okay in the end. Take a deep brea
th, shake it off, and go crush the rest of your college applications this cycl
e.
The balance of the applicants withdrew from our process before we issued decis
ions, or had applications that were insufficiently complete to render a decisi
on. We wish them luck in their college search.
We recognize it’s a lot of effort for all of you to apply to MIT. It’s an ho
nor and a privilege for us to read your applications. Thank you.
