A shield-maiden (Old Norse: skjaldmær [ˈskjɑldˌmæːr]) was a female warrior from Scandinavian folklore and mythology.

Shield-maidens are often mentioned in sagas such as Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks and in Gesta Danorum. They also appear in stories of other Germanic peoples: Goths, Cimbri, and Marcomanni. The mythical Valkyries may have been based on such shield-maidens.

The protective sign of the hammer was worn by women, as we know from the fact that it has been found in women's graves. It seems to have been used by the warrior also, in the form of the swastika. ... Primarily it appears to have had connections with light and fire, and to have been linked with the sun-wheel. It may have been on account of Thor's association with lightning that this sign was used as an alternative to the hammer, for it is found on memorial stones in Scandinavia besides inscriptions to Thor. When we find it on the pommel of a warrior's sword and on his sword-belt, the assumption is that the warrior was placing himself under the Thunder God's protection.

Mjölnir pendants were the Old Norse Religion's equivalent to the Christian cross during the later Viking Age.

Old Norse mythological stories survived in oral culture for at least two centuries, being recorded in the 13th century.

How this mythology was passed down is unclear; it is possible that pockets of pagans retained their belief system throughout the 11th and 12th centuries, or that it had survived as a cultural artefact passed down by Christians who retained the stories while rejecting any literal belief in them.

The historian Judith Jesch suggested that following Christianisation, there remained a "cultural paganism", the re-use of pre-Christian myth "in certain cultural and social contexts" that are officially Christian.

[Patrick Robinson Art and Animation] Reconstructing an image of Thor as pagans might have imagined him in the late Viking era. I've used the Old Norse Literature and contemporary images and idols. This piece has taken quite a lot of research, bringing everything we know about how Thor looked together. Including the bits that often get missed, like the fact that Thor has a whetstone imbedded permanently in his head. I've included some sources in the comments and my research is here below:

In Nordic art the gods are often represented wearing conical hats. The remains of Viking age hats from Birka show these kind of hats were probably made from wool. Scandinavian pagans, particularly towards the end of the period, wore small devotional hammer amulets. These can give us a pretty good idea of how pagans might have imagined the hammer of Thor. There is a lot of variety, but the general shape stays fairly consistent with a few deviating examples. There are several carvings of Thor on runestones, but these are simple outlines with the silhouette of a hammer. Their heavily stylised design makes them not very useful for reconstructing an image of Thor. Besides these, the clearest detailed image we have, that we can identify with Thor with some certainty is the Eyrarland idol from Iceland. The idol dates from around the 11th century. It depicts Thor with possibly a helmet, but more probably a hat. He has a long forked beard, which he clasps with both hands. Across his knees rests his hammer. In Iceland the shape of the hammer seems to have taken on a unique more cruciform shape. There is an Icelandic hammer amulet that conforms to this shape more or less. The moustache is curled in a style common in the late Viking period.



Most of our knowledge of Norse myth is contained within two medieval Icelandic books. The prose Edda, and the poetic Edda. They were written down in the 13th century, but scholars can confidently date many of the composition contained to well before the Christianisation of Iceland. We can be sure from references to Cloaks, tunics and breeches that the god’s wore contemporary dress.

Thor has a shard of a whetstone permanently lodged in his head from his battle with the giant Hrungnir. (Skaldskaparmal, Prose Edda)

His hammer handle is rather short thanks to Loki’s mischief. (Skaldskaparmal, Prose Edda)

Hammer is small enough to wear under his shirt (Skaldskaparmal, Prose Edda)

Cannot lift his hammer without his gloves of iron - (Gylfaginning, Prose Edda)

There is no evidence that the Viking era Scandinavians had any concept of the armoured gauntlets that appeared in the later medieval period. Nor as I understand are Thor’s Iron Gloves ever described as being chainmail or plate armour. My interpretation is that Thor’s Gloves either demonstrate Thor’s divine strength to be able to use solid iron gloves, or the magical attributes of the gloves to be flexible while made of iron.
